You should step in front of the camera more often. What you were describing about fog...did you take the camera outside and immediately start shooting? Humidity tends to fog up a camera fast so it's best to take it outside and let it warm up before using. That was my first thought but it could have been something different. I also encourage you to start moving into manual mode.
