The eye patch update

In case anyone’s been following our Intermittent Exotropia journey, I wanted to share some updates.  If you wanted to catch up you can find my previous posts on the subject HERE.

Last I left off I was trying the eye patch on Livvy’s good eye.  After that first try, however, I didn’t have much luck patching her eye for about a week or so.  I was not giving up though!  I thought it might be a good idea to try patching her eye when Daddy was home this time!  I thought he could help me get her excited to put and keep it on.  I put the eye patch on my hubby first and then on Livvy.  She looked like she was a little annoyed with it at first but we were quick to take her mind off it.  The hubby chased her around the house yelling out “I’m going to get you” while making this animalistic sound (something between a bark and bear growl).  I don’t know, don’t ask.  It seemed to work well and it’s amazing that Alivia could run without falling with only the one eye to see.  After that we put on Jake and the Neverland Pirates and she almost forgot her eye was patched completely!  It was a miracle!

Since, she has been wearing the eye patch every night before bed for a good 30 minutes which is exactly what the doctor ordered.  It has become a bedtime ritual and she has grown to like it.  It’s amazing!  You would think that she just tolerates it but, no, she actually likes it!  If the hubby is not home, than I wear it with her.  I also give her an extra one for her Jake doll.  At the end of the 30 minutes (which is an episode of The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or something), she says “off patch”.  She knows that she has worn it long enough.  She is a smart cookie!  I usually praise her with phrases of this nature “you are such a BIG girl”, and “you are such a GOOD girl”.  I give her big hugs and kisses and then it’s bedtime!  And to think that I was worried sick about patching her eye for how long?  That’s okay, that’s what a mommy does I guess.  So what’s next?

I will be calling her Ophthalmologist soon to ask if we should be patching it for a longer period of time.  I have to be honest, I haven’t seen much improvement as her eye still deviates out at times, but I’m trying to remain positive.  I keep praying that the patching will not interfere with her one good eye also as, apparently, this can happen per her doctor.  It doesn’t happen often but I would be crushed to find that we have caused her good eye to deviate.  Realistically, I see surgery in Alivia’s future when the doctor can actually get a true reading of the amount of deviating her eye actually does.  I’m thinking this true reading will not happen until Alivia’s around 4 or 5 at least.  It’s hard, if not impossible, to get a reading of a toddler’s eye with all of the movin’ and fussin’.

Anyhow, I’m just so proud of my little bugger!  She really is such a good little doobey!  She is always doing something to amaze me every day!

  2. Awe, I'm sorry you're having to go through this, it is worrysome when something isn't right with the little ones. She's strong though and has a great Mommy and Daddy so I know she will come through this! I just said a prayer that the drs would have wisdom and that the eye patch would do it's trick without ruining the good eye and also that you guys would have strength and peace through the ordeal. It sounds like you're doing awesomely though!!! Love that collage! Gorgeous pics that bottom one is just breathtaking!
